SPA statement
"Yes" to Article XIX messages
SPA chairmanship, regarding the letter of June 19-th, 1997, of Article 19, addressed to Socialist Party of Albania, its chairman, Fatos Nano, expressed the pleasure and its approval for all the raised problems, which are of special importance for preparing and realising free and fair elections on June 29-th, 1997, in Albania, as the only way out of the heavy crisis, which prevails in the country. We are for tolerance and democratic culture in expressing different opinions, as well as elaborating on the political debate. We appeal to all the Socialist Party members and sympathizers not to consider as acceptable to us the lack of respect for each other, the lack of political opponency estimation and the freedom of expression, normal demands of coexistence and political pluralism. On the other side, we will fight against any kind of persecution form against politicians, for their ideas, and, as it is already written in the letter of Article 19, we will denounce any one who opposes these democratic principals.
The Socialist Party of Albania has denounced in continuity the politisation and informative terror of the state media against opposition. On this occasion, we appeal again to the Government and the officials of the Albanian Radio and Television to establish the necessary equilibrium in the real representation of the political spectrum in Albania, because, as it is stated in the letter of Article 19, "There is an obvious movement in the favour of the Albanian Democratic Party and of the right wing political spectrum".
At the same time we wish and demand that Radio and Television institutions, under a great civilian responsibility, should assure the necessary equilibrium in the electoral campaign, by not creating, like in the past, priorities only in the favour of one political force and against the others.
SPA is fully committed to protect the freedom of information. It is against journalists' violence and punishment. At the same time, it is committed and appeals to its members and sympathizers to contribute in distributing, all over the country, any Albanian press, to assist the free movement of journalists and to create the conditions for correct and serious information.
Supporting the concern of Article 19, SPA will mediate with its authority, through its members and commissions of all levels, to insure the individual voting, without being threatened and frightened, based on their individual rights. These commissions should take all the necessary measures, foreseen in the law, to have a free vote counting, far from manipulations, and political interventions. Those who will try to bribe and those who will be bribed will be identified and will face law.
By greeting the letter of Article 19 for the serious problems it lays down in front of the Albanian public opinion, Albanian Socialist Party chairmanship addresses to all the Albanians, to all the political forces and their leaders to do their utmost in providing tolerance and mutual understanding during the electoral campaign. We appeal in transmitting peaceful messages and in realising an electoral process in conformity with law and democratic spirit.
We want June 29-th mark the beginning of a new period to the Albanians, the period of the full commitment of overpassing the political, economic and institutional deep crisis.

We realistically appreciate your estimations on Albania and the very important recommendations for the electoral campaign. You have always been present in Albania with your systematic concerns you have made present against the violation of the journalists' rights and the freedom of information.

Your vote, a contribution to Albania's salvation
Fatos Nano's speech in the Socialist rally
29-th June celebrations are approaching, when you, with your free vote and responsible one will make a determinative step in the resolve of the deep crisis the country is experiencing. With your vote you will render your contribution in the salvation of Albania from the catastrophe the corrupted criminal government Berisha established in the country. You will testify, like this, that there is a future for Albania.
You will testify that you will depart from Berisha's dictatorship and that are determined to make forward towards a real democracy of dignity to Albania and your families. I am assured that your selection will be for our alternative, which will be in the service of state construction, democratic institution reconstruction, overall elaborate of the free initiative, the strengthening of the private property, peace and public order insurance, your prosperity through your labour and your capabilities.
SPA defends the alternative which serves the realisation of your right and legal inspirations. It possesses, at the same time, the potential political intellectuals to meet the historic demands of reconstructing Albania and putting it into a normal democratic road, which realistically collaborates with its neighbours, being integrated into the Euro-Atlantic structures and being the factor of peace and stability in Europe and Balkans.
We, the socialists, in collaboration with the progressive opposition, will put an end to corruption, fraud and criminality, of the split and lack of confidence. We will put an end to the political persecution and revenge and will extend the freedom sizes in all the fields of life.
Foreign investments, the numerous Albanian's assets, your energies and capabilities are the three pillars to insure your development, employment, and well-being, which we will support and put at the service of your civilian and national dignity.
At the end, Mr. Nano invited the participants of the rally and all the Albanian electorate to vote for the candidates of the Socialist Party and for the republic form of governing in Albania.
