![]() DocumentiFatos Nano's interview to the daily press A summary of this interview is as follows: Q: When have you been born? A: In Tirana maternity house, in September of '52. Q: Have you ever been an ambitious student at school? A: My early vision was life enjoyment, without neglecting of being prepared to confront anything, which used to come forth to me. I have always accepted and supported the challenges, but I can not say that I have always come out victorious. I have been ambitious, in the constructive sense. Q: Why have you been graduated in the political-economic sciences? A: I was on my vocations, at the sea-side, when I was told that I had got the right to attend the high studies at the political-economics. When I asked why policy used to be studied together with economy, I was told that they were related with Marx. Then I looked for one of his works and I found "The Capital". After the increase of my professional diagram, I have peacefully realised that no one can become an economist without a good grasp of "The Capital", in the sense of managing the history of view doctrines, where anyone can distinguish quite well the turns or speculations with these ideas in the course of time. Q: After the student's time period, socialism still attracts you? A: The ideas, at any period of time, respond to certain developments. Even today, socialism, is an idea, a doctrine and I would like to distinguish from its axe the social solidarity, the idea of equal chances or, more precisely, the protecting mechanism of the inferior strata of the society. Q: Has your time of imprisonment left any positive tracks in your life? A: It seemed that only prison was lacking to me, to consider myself all-side prepared to face life. I used to be a pedagogue. I used to work in researching institutes in the communist pyramid, which was not scare at all, if you could dare bravely to offer anything. I have worked for three years in an agricultural cooperative in a village, in Tirana's vicinity. Right after my graduation, I used to work in the metallurgical combine of Elbasan, where I raised my family nest. Thus, only prison was lacking to me, to enjoy willingly different experiences life offers. I think, this is a full circle, which offers the possibility to enjoy optimistically the rest of the life. Q: Did you meet Alia before leaving the prison? A: It was an unavoidable meeting during the night of the unrest, when the prison was broken and the revolted prisoners made for my cell, with the inspiring idea or not, that there is no freedom without Nano. Thus, in my cell of 15 square meters, I found myself surrounded by approximately 45 people, by "dangerous bandits" of the last years, by 7 women, who used to work in some of pyramid scheme foundations, by an Italian couple divorced 45 days ago, who, in anguish, used to kiss and shed tears. Among them was Alia, who was attacked in the forehead by two people. It was a very human contact. I appreciated him for not loosing ground and pulling himself together. Q: Has there been any evolution in your relations with Berisha from 1991 to 1997? A: I can not say that there is any differences in my relations with Berisha. I have had two extreme contacts with him. With Berisha of '90s, in "Zeri i Popullit" editorial board, where we used to correct our stories, before being published in the next day, and poisonously used to discuss on the ways of the opening of the Albanian society. Those days, when the heart of the cardiologist used to beat, differ a lot from the day of Shkodra incident, when we were stuck in the road and he used to state that "Shkodra does not like socialists!". I remember to have replied to him: "Mr. Berisha! All of us are expecting you to help Democratic Party to better govern the country, by providing to it its independence and, you, by doing your job as the President. These are the maximum and minimum we demand so far, which will serve to the calming down of the situation". My imprisonment took place right after that, which used to be followed by 101 Berish'a attacks and tricks in the prison. For example, still not being public my motion addressed to SPA, Berisha was the first to be acquainted with it. (I do not want to elaborate on this issue). Four special guards were sent from Tirana to fully isolate me and save me, at least, from ...the mice. Berisha's direct order was: "Attention! A very dangerous letter for the Albanian policy has come out of the prison". I think that Berisha is a very strict type, reactive or reflective in his moral, human or politic behaving, so, it has not been in need too much time to me to observe him. The intellectual and media surrounding do their utmost to operate with the logic, the view diagram or actions of Berisha. But, that, in fact, does not rest for a long time within the type of the person, who is seeking solutions through negative impacts. Still, I expect Berisha to abandon this type. Q: What is your opinion about the Government of the National Reconciliation? A: The Government of the National Reconciliation was not an occasional solution, but a precipitation of this climate, of this generation, of these ideas confrontation. It is the confrontation of President's parallel executive with the real executive power. There has been left a very limited space to the Government to operate, because the President has taken all the measures to control the situation, when his government used to fail to do it. It is not only important the formula of the executive, as that of the National Reconciliation. Of importance is the setting up of the new institutions, with clear borders of relations and independence cooperation, at the same time. Q: How is the situation in the Socialist Party? A: After the reflective period of my imprisonment, when I joint the active political life, I found the background prepared by my friends, of creating a new bed of the political debate, that of the opening of the new page of the civilised Albanian policy. On this basis, not in any case we have responded to Berisha's provocations or to the provocation of the old policy. At a time that Berisha used to force us to denounce the accords, which have never been like this, we use to affirm our commitments in political contracts for the setting up of the government and we requested a normal operation of this government. Our motto is to move out from bunkers' policy (where the Albanian politicians traditionally have been stuck in, by expecting the enemy elimination) to the political battle field to confront alternatives. Unfortunately, despite of our will, which includes a bigger political spectrum nowadays, there is a zealous consensus, starting from the left center to the right one, which is a representation of the old policy. However, it is shrinked into favourable dimensions, to be disappeared once and forever. It nowadays exists round the presidency. If the presidency would be attacked and liberated, this can not be carried out by weapons or irritated crowds, but, only by ruining the fortified walls of the policy. Q: Will there be elections or solutions? A: The concept that the crisis can be overcome with whatever elections has failed on May 26, 1996. Unfortunately, I realise that the International Community still has not become so much conscious on the crisis aggravation in Albania. If the elections will be held for elections' sake, then, the crisis will remain the same, or even worse. As a minimum, the elections require not to be held under the state of emergency and the maximum would be that the vote should move obviously transparently as a kite from the voters to the political subject they elect. Q: The state of emergency is not lifted. "Boycott" should be ousted. SPA... A: I am of the opinion that a real consensus is in need to Albania, from the center left to the center right and I can argue this that a new and middle age generation politicians have come on stage, who know to maintain sustainable contacts. They can behave like this because, most of them, come from academic, intellectual circles, from those of culture, press, researching institutes etc. Q: The ideal result for you would not be SP majority victory? A: I am indifferent to SP's and others' part within the coalition. I am against, as well, the identifications as big or small parties. I am for the co-governing, for the responsibility split between position and opposition, to create, at least, in the country a sustainable situation. |
