Nano's Commemorative message on May 26, 1996

June 29-th, 1997, first liberation day from dictatorships

May 26, 1996, is a dark day, a day out of which everyone should draw conclusions on behalf of the Albanian history, on behalf of its presence and future.

May 26, 1996, is at the foundation of everything happened and happening in Albania, at the foundation of the present crisis, at the foundation of the democratic institutions deforming, of the democratic reforms interruption, of the prolongation of the post communist transition in Albania and closing up its way to European integration.

I would like to appeal to all the people, on this occasion, that by reminding all the historic factors and the recent ones, which have influenced on them in feeling as strangers in their own country, which have instigated revolts and protests against institutions, political powers or politicians by treating them as slaves, by denying to them life chances, by asking them to behave politically in exchange of bread and house security, in exchange of free initiative exercise and free movement in this small World, which should be opened to the Albanians, as well.

May 26 of this year gives us access to earlier parliamentary elections, because, just on May 26, 1996, was violated the democratic fundamental institution, free vote and the institutions constructed on it.

There are only two alternatives. The first one, to be subdued again to Berisha, which I do not believe that any Albanians, all over the country, would have wished to be converted into a slave, in the service of the totalitarian state machine, machine which interrupted the democratic processes in the country and is closing up the ways of Albania's integration to Europe.

The second laid down alternative is the profound uproot of the evil thing, the mentality roots and political adventurism, which composed the Albanian precedent, May 26. Through civilian courage and mankind energies, in cooperation with progress political forces, which combat to eliminate any other possible May 26 script in Albania, should be ensured people's massive participation in politics and civilian life and into the electoral campaign, which had to block and get out, once and forever, from the Albanian political life, the authors of the violation of the free vote.

I appeal to everyone to make his/her utmost in supporting the Government of the National Reconciliation, by supporting the party front, which ensures the authority of this Government, by creating a fundamental base to the international factor interested into a nonrepetition of another May 26 in Albania, and by forcing Berisha and berishism to, once and forever, depart with the Albanian political and civilian life.

Brothers and sisters, pull yourself together, defend your life, protect your ballot, because, this is Albanian real future, the future of your children, whom, I am sure, would not have wished to place bunches of flowers on our days victims' the graves, but, instead, would wish to have a prosperous future in Albania.

Over popular alarm:

"Berisha's troops are coming"

The call "Berisha's troops are coming" will alarm everyone, all round Albania. The question is of hundreds or even more youngsters, recruited by Berisha's militants (Memia or Markagjoni, for example) to serve in the Republic Guard troops. To a zealous salary of 30.000 leke per month, this contingent of troops, coming mainly from North and Northeast of the country, is under the command of Mulosmani. Their recruiting, their armament and their use is not carried out for Motherland's sake, without mentioning here that all the recruiting procedures are openly against the law. Nobody knows about money sources used to keep this troops in operation. It is undoubtless that they are in the service of personal political Berisha's interests. The badly dressed youngsters, but well armed, patrol wherever Berisha goes. Their payment is motivated by the propaganda "to defend democracy put at risk by red rebels". The dilemma between this propaganda and reality is their concern, as well.

The fresh facts were the events in Cerrik. The fight between some 100 special troops and native inhabitants, labelled by national TV as "armed bandits" prove this dilemma. There is a present tension in Cerrik that the town will be under attack again by numerous special forces. This has put the people into an alarm by collecting big quantity of ammunition and weapons these days. It is obvious that civilian self protection is organized. When the woman Mayor of the town, Mishelina Xhelo, asked Berisha by phone about any eventual other attack, he used to promise her that the town will not be attacked during night! Some four tanks are concentrated in the national road, which leads to Cerrik, and special troops are located in the vicinity of Elbasan.

There is no party division in Cerrik these days, local people confess. All of them have only one goal: town's protection from Berisha's troops, as they call them now. It is revealed that an amateur camera has recorded everything, but, its material has not become public. In the special troops car with Tirana number plate, it is reported to have been found a "black list" with Cerrik citizen's names.

Starting as a protest of opposing the new district police chief nominee, without the consensus of the local political forces, the situation precipitated afterwards into the slogans "We do not hand over weapons without forcing Berisha to quit".

Being asked on the current situation in Cerrik and Elbasan, SP local leader, Cerma, said that, after discussing on the latest developments in the region, we, as local political forces, came out with a declaration, addressed to the local authorities and the Interior Minister, Celo, in which, besides the re-nomination of district chief of police, Suvaria, based on the consensus of local political forces, we demand, once again, the removal of district prefect, Tonin Alimhilli.
