TOWARDS GE-G8
Document of the Italian Anarchist Federation (FAI)
meeting in Bologna on May 12, 13, 2001
The logic of profit grinds human beings, social structures
(schooling, health, social security etc.), guarantees and environment,
next to an unchallenged domineering of the whole planet. The catching of
capitalism goes in pair with the strengthening of State control. In home
affairs control unfolds through emphasizing disciplinary methods, while
on international level through multiplying of high and low intensity conflicts,
significantly presented as international police operations (from Iraq to
Columbia via former Yugoslavia).
IMF, WTO, NATO etc. are intergovernmental organisms.
Sturdy cudgels inside the single states make sure that the agreements signed
in transnational contexts are carried out. While the control of economy
is transferred from state to international precincts, the punctual counterpoint
is the increase of repressive conditions. The various Clubs of the rich
and powerful are functional to weaving a texture of mastership on the whole
surface of the earth, projecting economical, environmental, military policies
of rule of the few in front of the vast majority of populations.
In particular, decades of policies launched in the
yearly G8 summits (formerly G7) engendered consolidation of a pyramid of
ferocious hierarchies on the planet - in fact we assist a wild and mindless
rush heading to the top of the pyramid, in every domain with a concentration
of powers in the hands of the few, quite often irresponsible and short-sighted,
unable to go beyond the brutal pursue of mere personal or immediate interest,
for themselves and their own reference elite in each of the 8 nations.
Together with OECD (grouping the 29 principal
industrialized countries), with WB, MIF, IRB (the financial institutions
that dictate the rhythms of outflow of money on earth), WTO (that regulates
exchanges and services between nations), G8 is the organism chiefly responsible
for the political strategies pursued on world scale by the Club-of-the-rich-and-powerful.
These policies result in worsening the split of inequalities between nations,
widening the shears of difference between a rich, military overwhelming,
technologically advanced North - minority on the planet - and a South ever
reduced to poverty, although all principal and most precious raw materials
are located there - oil, gold, minerals and materials for the foremost
technologies.
But also in the very heart of the Empire the gap between
classes increases - precariousness of jobs, privatization of services,
erosion of guarantees and of rights are common features in our daily panorama.
To stand up efficaciously against destructive, denying
liberty policies of G8, WB, IMF, WTO etc., the promotion of radical and
rooted struggles, able to create a steady connection of solidarity between
exploited of North or South of the world, is needed.
With this outlook we consider of importance all mobilizations
against the summits of the rulers of Earth, but emphasize as well the priority
on international level of struggles in defense of environment, of liberty,
of workers income - against military expenses and wars, discrimination
and racism.
This glimpse on the new century seems to open a new
perspective to anarchist action and proposals, protagonist, as they have
been, of all struggles against globalization. But a jump forward is needed
to follow a practice of decreasing the importance of the spectacular, while
building sound proposals. And it must be done in hurry, before street protest
against summits be transformed in a periodically celebrated rite. A strong
network of solidarity needs being woven, not only virtual but a concrete
real one, molding the critical mass, but at the same time behaving as all-penetrating
dust to jam the hellish machinery of the rulers.
Anarchists assisting to FAI meeting in Bologna of May
12 and 13, consider of importance an autonomous, self organized presence
in Genoa’s mobilizations, capable of emphasizing in the first hand the
communicative aspects.
Therefore they decide:
to adhere to the “Call to the anarchist movement…”
and participate in the June 9 demonstration in Genoa;
to support and promote local mobilizations on Sat.,
July 14;
appraise that grass-roots syndicates, in acceptance
of the call addressed to them, have called a day of general strike for
July 20, and consequently decide to participate in the concomitant demonstration;
finally invite to build up a specific presence for
Sat., July 21.
